Perspective Ireland have recently won a design-build competition for a new 40 bed Residential Healthcare Unit with associated Mental Health Day Care Centre and ancillary facilities to be constructed in Kenmare, Co. Kerry for the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE). The unit will comprise of a 14 bed household with integrated 6 bed Dementia Unit, a 20 bed household, a Central Therapy Module and related community spaces including Dental Services, and a discrete ambulance base building containing offices, overnight accommodation and changing facilities. The design approach is highly sustainable, in terms of site planning & orientation, high thermal performance of the building envelope, green rating of all building components, use of recycled materials, rainwater harvesting and permeability of paved surfaces to attenuate surface water run off. Biomass (wood pellet) boilers provide the primary heat source in conjunction with heat recovery achieving an ‘A’ UK EPC Rating
